Free App Friday from Handango.com

Just thought I’d slip this short post in for you. Especially if you are a gadget geek like I am. Awhile back Handango.com started a new fun (sort of) feature: Free App Friday. Once a week they give away a licensed application for PDAs, SmartPhones, Windows Mobile devices, Palm device, Blackberry devices and probably more. Each Friday it will be something different - but only one program.
Last time I checked the freebie was for a Palm device, and today it is for a Blackberry device - niether of which I own, so no use to me. But, patience is a virtue and in time I know they’ll have something I can use, or will be interested in. Currently I use an AT&T Tilt - I love it!

Check here each Friday!

Software - RoboForm

RoboForm
Both the Free Download version and the Pro version are excellent.
Roboform installs a Toolbar for both Internet Explorer and Firefox - the program then stores the usernames and passwords for your account websites. The Free version will store up to 10 sets, the Pro version is unlimited.
Roboform will also auto-generate strong passwords for your accounts. All you have to remember is one Master Password to allow access to RoboForm. When you visit a site RoboForm knows it, and displays a button to autofill your account access info.
Check out the full list of features here.

DivShare: Upload and Share your files

DivShare File Host

I caught a posting about DivShare on an RSS feed December 23 and surfed over to check it out. I wanted to share more files on 360 but didn’t want to pull them from my other server at the time.

DivShare seems like quite a ‘find’ in my book. Where else can you upload and share a 100 MB file? It’s easy, if you can upload to Yahoo Photos you can use DivShare. There are unlimited uploads and downloads, unlimited files and no pop ups or spam! Since Dec 23 I’ve had absolutely no unsolicited emails from DivShare. The email message I did sent to them was responded to in less than 12 hours too. I requested some privacy on the files and it looks like they are going to grant that wish according to a recent DivShare Blog post. I’ve asked for folders just today and am keeping my fingers crossed for that as well.

When you want to share a file/image you get links too- html formatted for your convenience. If it’s for your blog there’s a formatted html direct link, another for the forum and a two more for images: full size and thumbnail. There’s even a download count for each file and the date of the last download of that file. Pretty cool! Soon there will be a mid-size image link as well.

I posted all the PDF files for my Fall in the Garden II quilt on Divshare. You can use those files to do a test of the download speed if you wish. All are less than .22 MB except the Fall in the Garden PDF which is the full image at 3.44MB. My Yahoo 360 blog entry from yesterday about my new truck has all those photos hosted on DivShare as well.

Sign up for DivShare: it’s free and all you need is an email address. There are NO ads on DivShare at this time, but expect those to be coming. This site has to have some sort of income to cover storage and bandwidth. DivShare has promised that ads will not interfere with your use of the site.

Storing those USB Flash Drives

Today a post mentioned a hint on how to keep track of the USB dongle. The dongle in question unlocks the use of Husqvarna Viking software for our sewing machines. Without the dongle the software is locked - bummer if it gets lost. Well, here’s my tip which I also posted to the group and thought I’d share here as well. ‘Cause it works for the dongle and both my USB Flashdrives. You can never… … have enough of those can you?

Go to Walmart and get a Case Logic USB case. There are two styles that I’m aware of. One holds 2 USB drives and the other holds 6. The larger one is less than $6.00 if I remember right. Look in the Electronics Dept right by the USB drives they have for sale. Get the one that holds 6 drives. It is easier to find when stuff on your desk starts getting stacked up high.

They are about 5“ wide, 4” tall and 1″ deep. Fold like a binder and zipper closed. There’s even a handy see through pocket on outside to hold a flash card, note or other small, flat object. I’ve seen them in red/black, blue/black and black/black.
